POSITION TITLE:  

POSITION SUMMARY:

Constructs, maintains, and operates overhead and underground distribution and transmission lines and substations and keeps informed on and complies with all safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Line Foreman

Provides work direction for: Apprentices and other personnel as assigned

EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Members: Does everything possible in the position to give the members superior service, is constantly alert for possible property damage and answers or refers all member inquiries.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES:

Personally performs the following activities unique to this position:
  1. Performs all the necessary activities in the construction and maintenance of energized and de-energized overhead and URD distribution and transmission lines and related activities.
  2. Restores electric service during and after working hours.
  3. Reads and interprets maps, specifications, staking sheets, and diagrams.
  4. Makes connections and disconnections as required.
  5. Inspects work after completed to ensure that it has been done in accordance with applicable specifications and codes.
  6. Performs switching in substations and in the field.
  7. Changes out and checks rubber gloves, sleeves, and other protective devices.
  8. Splices all sizes of wire (distribution, feeder, and transmission circuits).
  9. Replaces damaged and defective poles and equipment.
  10. Clears right-of-way as necessary and trims trees as required.
  11. Puts out work signs and barricades around work areas.
  12. Patrols line, checks for defective material, equipment or unsafe conditions and notifies foreman of problem areas.
  13. Assists in taking physical inventory.
  14. Prepares reports of all accidents and submits to foreman.
  15. Assists foreman in training apprentices.
  16. Learns and practices first aid, CPR and artificial and pole top resuscitation.
  17. Operates vehicles and equipment including pole trailers, buckets, and other equipment as assigned.
  18. Assists in collections as required.

 

Performs the following activities common to all operations employees:

  1. Sees that trucks tools, and equipment assigned are in good working order.
  2. Participates in job safety and training. Learns and complies with all Tri-County Electric Membership Corporation safety rules. Operates all transportation equipment in a safe manner and looks out for the safety of others.
  3. Keeps informed about the Cooperative’s policies, plans, and programs.
  4. Exercises reasonable care in the use of and security of all cooperative-owned property.
  5. Keeps supervisor informed of all activities.
  6. Answers all member inquiries promptly or refers them to proper authority at the utilities. Makes every effort at all times to be courteous to the members and do everything possible to develop their support for the cooperative.
  7. Cooperates with all employees in maintaining good working relationships and high morale, exchanges ideas and job experience.
  8. Completes paperwork and assigned reports accurately and on schedule
  9. Performs other duties as requested or directed.

EDUCATION:

High school graduate or equivalent. Position must be able to learn from technical manuals and apply information in the completion of duties. Must be able to complete reports and other paperwork and should be able to perform mathematical calculations in the completion of assigned duties. Experience above the minimum may be substituted for a portion or all of the education requirement.

EXPERIENCE:

Successful completion of Tri-County Electric Membership Corporation apprenticeship program including the completion of written tests and labs administered through TVPPA. Education above the minimum requirement may be substituted for a portion of the experience requirement.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:

A thorough knowledge of construction and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution and transmission lines. Must have a knowledge of REA Materials Specifications, and National Electric Safety Code. Must know and practice first aid and CPR. Must be able to acquire within a reasonable time span a knowledge of area geography.

ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

Should be able to perform activities necessary to complete work assignments described in the position description. This includes climbing, lifting, working in awkward position and the use of assigned equipment including buckets, forklift, and winches. Must possess a valid Tennessee or Kentucky CDL.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Outside work in all kinds of weather. Irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays. Overtime is required. Must be available for on-call rotation.

After an offer of employment has been made a physical examination will be required.
